Swedish fashion retailer Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) plans to hire 800 people in India this year as part of its sales network expansion, according to the company’s India Country Manager Janne Einola. The hiring would be for new stores. With 17 stores opened last year, this year’s expansion will depend on the availability of real estate at the locations, he said.
The group, which has a total of nine labels in its umbrella, including COS, & Other Stories, Monki, Weekday Cheap Monday and ARKET, will not introduce any other brand in India under the current single brand foreign direct investment (FDI) retail policy due to sourcing requirements, according to a report.
It has only introduced H&M in India in 29 stores. H&M has also started online sales recently, aiming to track Indian customers from places where it does not have any physical presence.
The company become profitable in the first year of operations in India and is optimistic about future profits. It is also discussing with the Indian Government to ease out the local sourcing conditions for companies, which source from here for their global operations.
