South Africa’s apparel imports from Bangladesh are set to breach last year’s figures as they have already touched $91.724 mn in the first three quarters of this year. The imports amounted to $105.578 mn last year. Bangladesh’s share in South Africa’s total apparel imports was merely 6.26 percent during January to September this year.
South Africa’s garment imports from Bangladesh amounted to $73.682 mn in 2020, $91.784 mn in 2019, $87.979 mn in 2018 and $65.345 mn in 2017, according to market report.
As for the quarterly imports of South Africa from Bangladesh, they were at $31.623 mn in Q3 2022, $27.263 mn in Q2 2022 and $32.838 mn in Q1 2022. The imports were recorded at $26.502 mn in Q4 2021, $27.053 mn in Q3 2021 and $25.472 mn in Q2 2021.
Imports of trousers and shorts were at $29.339 mn, constituting 32.67 percent of the total apparel imports during January-September 2022. The imports of jerseys stood at $21.732 mn (24.20 percent), T-shirts at $14.391 mn (16.03 percent), shirts at $9.275 mn (10.33 percent) and jackets and blazers at $3.541 mn (3.94 percent). Bangladesh was one of the top five apparel suppliers to South Africa, as per market report.
