Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan recently inaugurated the country’s first-ever garment factory to facilitate income of prisoners at the Narayanganj District jail. The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association trained around 400 prisoners to run the factory in two shifts. Their earnings will be credited to their respective accounts. The prisoners can either send the money to their families or withdraw the amount after their prison term gets over, according to jail superintendent Subhas Kumar Ghosh. Built on a 5,000-sqr.ft area with the help of the district administration and the department of social services, 57 imported machines were installed at the factory, Ghosh as saying. The authorities have also installed six looms inside the jail where 12 prisoners will be working for producing Jamdani fabrics.
