Industrial thread manufacturer Coats is the latest to join the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s (EMF) industry network, which supports firms in their efforts to align with the principles of a circular economy. As a member, Coats gains access to EMF network events, workshops and other collaborative activities designed to encourage the adoption of circular business practices.

Rajiv Sharma, Group Chief Executive, Coats, said: ‘Sustainability is core to our strategy. Becoming an Ellen MacArthur Foundation network member means we can join the conversation on the circular economy – both to share our expertise and to learn from others.”

The EMF network works by three pillars of sustainability: designing out waste and pollution, keeping
products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems.

In 2018, Coats launched its current sustainability strategy which includes a number of time-bound targets to be met by 2022. The plan focuses on five ‘priority areas’, including water, energy, effluent, emissions and social sustainability.

In line with the principles of a circular economy, Coats developed its Epic EvoVerde sewing thread to be entirely recyclable.

“Their circular design work, particularly the development of threads made from recycled materials, is a good start and we look forward to supporting them as they scale their ambitions,” Joe Murphy, Network Lead at the EMF, said of its new recruit.

“We are delighted to welcome Coats to the foundation’s network. As a network member, they will need to lead the transition to a circular economy,” he added.

Sharma concluded: “Together, through organisations like this, we can accelerate change that makes a bigger difference for us, our customers and the industries in which we operate.”
