Members of the Tirupur domestic garments manufacturers’ association staged a protest against the rise in the cotton yarn price, in front of the city corporation’s main office on 14-05-2022. The protesters urged the Union Government to take steps to control the price by banning the cotton export from India.

The yarn price was increased by 40 per kilogram on all counts in the beginning of May. The 40’s count yarn is presently sold at 434 per kg compared to 237 last May.

“Lakhs of people are directly and indirectly employed in the garment industry. Nearly 50 percent of the garment units in the district have temporarily reduced their production to tide over the price rise, affecting the livelihoods of their employees.”

Ravichandran urged the Union Government to take stock of the situation and come out with relief measures to save the units that are on the brink of closure.

The association also extended its support to the strike called on by several garment industry associations on May 16 and 17 to protest against the cotton and yarn price hike.

The State weavers’ wing President, on 14-05-2022, sought immediate intervention from the Union Government to control the abnormal cotton and yarn prices.

In a statement on 14-05-2022, Rajendran said the garment units in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and districts are severely affected because of the price hike.
