Witnesses drop in overall number of buyers

The 84th edition of Modaprima (Florence, 18-20 May 2018) came to an end recently at the Stazione Leopolda with the presentation of 40 collections produced by a selection of some of the best names in Italy in this production segment.

Over the three days of the event the companies met a very international public of buyers, confirming the distinctive signature of the fair which was created to promote ready-towear clothing and accessories collections for men and women destined for medium and large-scale distribution on the global scene.

The final numbers showed a drop in attendance – around 25 per cent compared to the levels recorded a year ago – resulting in the total attendance of over 950 members of the trade. With regard to the foreign markets – which account for 70 per cent of the overall number of buyers – these showed an increase in buyers from South Korea and the Baltic States; the numbers were confirmed for France, Portugal and Hong Kong; there was a fall in buyers from Japan, Spain and Russia. There was also a decrease in the buyers from Italy compared to the last edition.

Japan once again confirmed its leading position in the list of the top 15 key countries followed by South Korea, Russia, France, Latvia, Spain, Portugal, Hong Kong, Estonia, Croatia, United States, Canada, Lithuania, Germany and South Africa.

“This edition of Modaprima reflected the sector’s difficulties and the ongoing evolutions of the calendars devoted to the production and presentation of collections,” says Agostino Poletto, General Manager of Pitti Immagine. “The numbers and results recorded over the past few days on the one hand confirm the fair’s high level of internationality and its vocation for foreign promotion, but on the other hand they also force us to reflect on the exhibition format on which we have already been working for a while. The program dedicated to incoming delegations of foreign buyers that we have been staging for several seasons in conjunction with the ICE Agency is definitely one of the essential drivers of the promotion of our companies. The ICE Agency has now become a strategic partner for us and at this edition together we also brought 14 foreign companies to Florence from Japan, Russia, South Korea, Ukraine, Poland, Latvia and Spain.”
