UK Biotech Company Zonitise has launched what it says is the market’s first laundry product that eliminates germs and imparts an antimicrobial coating on clothing. The London outfit has developed the solution, that’s hypoallergenic and non-toxic, to offer consumers the ability to better protect themselves from pathogens, particularly while COVID-19 remains at large. It’s claimed that just 50 millilitres of the solution, used for a full load of clothes, can offer protection for up to one month, which can be topped up upon the next wash cycle.

Edward Tennent, Antimicrobial Consultant and Director at Zonitise, said: “With the UK beginning its return to normality it has been great to launch the UK’s first Antimicrobial Laundry Additive. “Our main focus with this unique product is infection prevention, especially in the healthcare sector.

However we took the decision to make the product available to anyone as an additional layer of protection on our clothing against the virus and many other harmful germs we may come in contact with.”
The technology is reportedly effective against SARS-CoV-2, a strain of COVID-19, meaning it’s particularly valuable amidst the pandemic.

Zonitise singled out healthcare workers and school children as two groups in society that should look to leverage the Antimicrobial Laundry Additive, with the latter group seeing a rise in cases since students returned to their classes. The solution will be available in 500ml bottles at a price of £24.99, which is said to be enough for 10 wash cycles.

“Traditional laundry detergents clean clothes, but they are not as effective against germs and other bacteria, which can remain and multiply on clothes and laundry between washes,” noted Tennent.

“The antimicrobial fabric technology in Zonitise Antimicrobial Laundry Additive binds to the clothes and remains active between washes. The technology essentially pops the outer cell membranes of micro-organisms that come in touch with it like a water balloon, effectively destroying unwanted microbes so they can’t cause odours and fabric damage, but also helping reduce the risk of bringing home any harmful germs your clothes come in contact with.”
