The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (TEXPROCIL) celebrated the achievements of its member exporters at an annual awards function hosted at the President Hotel, Mumbai, on May 7, 2024. TEXPROCIL is the first export promotion council set up in India in 1954 and is responsible for promoting exports of cotton textiles. Every year, the Council recognises the role played by exporters by presenting awards in different categories. This year, the council distributed awards for the years 2021-2022 and 2022-2023, including the coveted Platinum Trophy for the highest global exports for each year.
Invited as the Chief Guest, Santosh Kumar Sarangi, DGFT, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, spoke about the various measures on which the Ministry is working with the exporters to promote our exports. DGFT said that there are many obvious challenges here, and there is a need to catch up with some of these countries to ensure that India remains one of the biggest suppliers of quality textiles and apparel to the whole world.
Roop Rashi, Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, presided over the event. While congratulating the award winners, Sunil Patwari, Chairman, TEXPROCIL, stated in his opening remarks that “Today marks a joyous occasion as we gather for the TEXPROCIL Awards after a hiatus of nearly two years. We extend a warm welcome to Santosh Kr Sarangi, our esteemed guest, and express gratitude to Roop Rashiji, our Textile Commissioner, for gracing us with her presence. The textile industry’s resilience is evident in the positive growth of cotton textile exports despite challenges. We’re on track to achieve the government’s ambitious export targets, thanks to the concerted efforts of the industry and supportive policies. Challenges persist, such as raw material availability and market access, but with governmental intervention, we remain optimistic. The launch of the Kasturi brand signifies a step towards quality assurance and premium generation. We’re honoured by your presence and seek your continued support for our initiatives.
Santosh Kumar Sarangi, DGFT, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, along with Roop Rashi, Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, then distributed the awards”.
Delivering his special address, Santosh Kumar Sarangi, DGFT, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, said that “the Ministry of Commerce, along with the RBI and Department of Revenue, is actively promoting e-commerce for textile and home textile exports. DGFT is committed to facilitating this by engaging with leading e-commerce exporters from TEXPROCIL to address policy concerns. Despite challenges, India aims to achieve ambitious export targets set by the Prime Minister. While textile exports have stagnated compared to other countries, there’s been a concerted effort to enhance productivity through better seeds and agronomy practices. Collaboration between industry, researchers, and the government is essential for this. Investments, economies of scale, and brand building are crucial for the sector’s growth. Measures like the RoDTEP and RoSCTL schemes aim to support exporters, along with efforts to negotiate favourable trade agreements. With concerted efforts, India aims to become a leading supplier of quality textiles globally.”
In her address that followed, Roop Rashi, Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, said that with the growth of the textile industry lies the growth of India. She also expressed her pleasure at being a part of the ceremony as a family member and supporting the industry by being a guiding light on the vital support initiated by the Ministry and Government in textile and clothing exports. She said that the textile industry has made India proud through its achievements only because of the commitment and dedication of the current and earlier generations. She was also in agreement with the many issues pointed out by the chairman in his welcome address and assured speedy resolutions by taking a stand shoulder to shoulder with the industry in the efforts to grow the country’s exports. In conclusion, she expressed her appreciation of TEXPROCIL leading from the front and assured the full support of the Ministry of Textiles towards this effort.
