US sustainable textile start-up LifeLabs has launched what it says is the world’s most cooling t-shirt range. Based on the firm’s CoolLife technology, derived from an infrared transparent material which allows body heat to escape, the garment is expected to reduce one’s body temperature by nearly 3oF. “The T-shirt is a quintessential item in every wardrobe so we’re taking the simplicity of the basic T-shirt and re-engineering it into something more,” said Scott Mellin, CEO of LifeLabs.
LifeLabs Design, which seeks to bring to market the work of researchers at Stanford University in California, says its clothes can reduce our reliance on energy-intensive air-conditioning and heating systems by cooling the human as the planet warms.
“As temperatures rise, we’ve created the only cooling T-shirt on the planet in a number of styles and colours that will provide unparalleled comfort for any occasion. Our apparel is designed with a practical sensibility and by using less materials and reduced energy usage, we’re also supporting a more sustainable lifestyle,” said Mellin.
LifeLab’s mens range comprises short- and long-sleeved crew tops in a jersey knit polyethylene fabric, whilst the women’s range differs only be silhouette. LifeLabs has also developed a solution called WarmLife which comparatively uses a metallic nano-coating that reflects body heat back to the skin to increase body temperature. As energy prices rise, such a technology can help consumers stay warm without relying on central heating systems.
