Inditex-owned fashion brand Zara has released a circular denim collection for babies and children under the principles of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign programme.
Zara, which launched a Jeans Redesign collection for women earlier this year, wanted to expand its range of denim which meets the Jeans Redesign guidelines on durability, recyclability and traceability.
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign Project was launched in 2019 and now brings together more than 100 leading brands, retailers and manufacturers spanning 27 countries across five continents.
All denim products made under the programme must meet a set of guidelines defined by more than 80 industry experts across academia, brands, retailers, manufacturing and more to make jeans fit for a circular economy.
Zara said the new “denim collection is designed with its whole life cycle in mind”. All fabrics include a minimum of 98 per cent cellulose-based fibres and at least five per cent recycled content. Most contain 80 per cent cotton and 20 percent recycled cotton.
All components can be easily disassembled for reuse or recycling. For the children’s collection, Zara said it had added removable buttons and tried to avoid metal rivets or zippers. Interior pocket bags include information about how the garment is designed to be recycled.
The Jeans Redesign x Zara collection for children includes a worker jacket, cargo jeans with an elastic waist, wide-leg relaxed fit jeans and loose fitting jeans with a ripped knee. For babies, the collection offers a denim overshirt, overalls, a pull-over denim shirt and a collared dress.
Zara’s first Jeans Redesign collection launched in September. It included women’s jeans, midi skirts, shackets and jumpsuits.
