Bangladesh has given tough competition to China in apparel exports to Italy. In 2022, China’s apparel shipment increased by 7.24 percent to $2.704 bn, but Bangladesh achieved an impressive growth of 21.55 percent in garment exports to Italy, reaching $1.725 bn. However, China remained the top supplier with a 16.80 percent share in 2022.
China’s shipment turned positive after a continued downward trend in previous years. Italy’s apparel imports from China declined by 5.35 percent to $2.522 bn in 2021 from $2.664 bn in 2020. The imports were $3.167 bn in 2018 and $2.876 bn in 2019, on a decline since 2018, according market report.
However, Bangladesh’s performance in apparel exports to Italy improved in the previous year. The number declined by 18.7 percent to $1.296 bn in 2020 from $1.594 bn in 2019, but sharply recovered to increase by 9.46 percent to $1.419 bn in 2021, which further jumped by 21.55 percent in 2022, as per market report.
China remained the top supplier with a 16.80 percent share in Italy’s total garment imports of $16.098 bn in 2022, while Bangladesh was the second top supplier with 10.72 percent share. Spain (9.07 percent), France (8.30 percent), Germany (5.77 percent), the Netherlands (5.55 percent), Romania (3.86 percent), Turkiye (3.66 percent), Belgium (3.63 percent), and Tunisia (3.17 percent) were among the other top 10 suppliers for Italy.
