Two garment manufacturing sites in Cambodia have been ravaged by fires recently, but it’s not yet known what started the blaze. Recently, the factory of 8 Star Sportswear Ltd caught fire and was quickly engulfed as stock fuelled the flames which soon after spread to the neighbouring Morica Industry Co Ltd.
“We don’t know the total losses yet, but a warehouse of clothes and machines were completely razed in addition to an electrical generator room,” Morica’s administrative manager Tong Lib said.
No staffs were present at either site as it broke out over the weekend. Local reports suggest that it took 45 fire trucks and more than five hours for emergency services to get the fire under control.
“The factories contained a lot of clothes and items vulnerable to fire, so the blaze and smoke were strong, especially the toxic fumes from the clothes and other objects, which gave our firefighters a headache,” noted municipal fire department director Prom Yorn.
The extent of the fire will leave employees of both facilities out of work for the foreseeable future. “We hope that the workers and important buyers will understand this,” Tong lib added.
Investigators are working to find the source of the outbreak to determine what is responsible for the loss of property.
