Functional finishes with multiple attributes in one fabric are the trend of this season. Viscose and its allies are in boom in conjunction with value-added fibres like Kevlar and Nomex. In tropical countries like us, moisture management and odour control in cotton and workwear fabrics are in high demand; most important is durability and consistent performance. There are many gimmicky finishes like temperature control, skin nourishment, etc. around the corners, but those are not practically adding any value when articulated in usage. UV protection is one of the key demands of the season, for sure.

New developments have become very cost-centric. Even if we do a NASA-like project with an out-of-the box concept, ultimately it gets compared with commodities. That boils down to lack of motivation for new ideas. Chemical weightage in fabric is on average 7-8% of total cost, but most negotiable domain is chemical only. I feel a cushion should be provided to fresh brains to come up with new technologies, keeping cost secondary. Of course it has to be cost-wise sustainable but should not be a primordial focus.

The supercritical carbon dye oxide dyeing with zero water incorporation concept is a big-time discussion now. Also, with more heads, digital printings are coming up with multiple value-added features. In the last ITMA, we have seen an ocean of new developments in both the above domains.
