Before sustainability became prevalent, it was typified by unshapely, anti-fit silhouettes in desaturated colours. Stereotyped as pared back and mundane, it was the domain of eco-warriors who prioritized sustainability over style. Over the years, industry pioneers have worked relentlessly to integrate the two, so they are synonymous with each other. Today, designers are giving conscious fashion a facelift by introducing structured silhouettes, delicate embroidery, and serotonin-boosting colours into the mix.
Sustainability no longer subscribes to a singular aesthetic, and ‘Karuna Khaitan is one such label that is making consciously crafted fashion ultra-covetable. The brand’s simple garments make a lasting impression – think enduring classics, reinterpreted with natural fabrics. With a fearless play of shape, texture, and proportion, the pieces have a timeless appeal for a sustainable life span. With considered fabrics and utilitarian silhouettes, the designs have longevity value and can be re-worn and re-invented endlessly. The mindfully crafted and ethically produced forever pieces prove that buying better is the key to buying less.
The amalgamation comprises of Dresses, Overlays, Tunics, Kurtas, and the like, playing with hand embroidery and subtle embellishments. The color palette evokes feminity and tranquility- Delicate Blue, Pale Green, Lilac to Pastel Pink; the hues are timeless and ensure you will be wearing it now, and for all the seasons to come.
On The Road to Sustainability:
Natural Fibers & Warehouse Surplus Fabrics
The brand ensures that it uses only natural, biodegradable, plant-based fibers (cotton, linens, silks, etc.) in the manufacturing process. After detailed supervision, a large part of the collection is sourced from the finest surplus fabrics from warehouses and factories across India. This means that each collection has only limited pieces.
Carbon Neutral Footprint
To offset the carbon footprint, a tree is planted for every order received on the website and the brand has partnered with www.grow-trees.com to effectuate the same.
Additionally, the thank you cards are made from seed paper, which can be planted in a pot to witness the beautiful creations of nature come to fruition.
Zero Plastic Packaging
Moreover, the packaging consists of absolutely zero plastic, that is, packaging that is entirely reusable or recyclable. All the products are individually wrapped into eco-friendly parchment paper which then is placed into a self-sealing cardboard box before being shipped to the customer
Zero Waste Process
Karuna Khaitan gives back by donating all the leftover fabric to an NGO based out of Kolkata, India, namely ‘Sreejoni Basha’. There, young girls recycle the waste fabric into small cushions and other items. This is done in an attempt to provide the women a vocational skills and also give them a source of income.
