Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has commissioned a 500 mn rupee export apparel factory in Moneragala, a remote region in the Indian Ocean Island. The factory build by DAG Apparels (Pvt) Ltd has generated 600 direct jobs and will also boost income of an estimated 3,000 persons indirectly, his office said.
Prime Minster Rajapaksa was accompanied by Managing Director Gamini Keerthiratne, Directors Dinuka Shrimal, Nipuna Geethmal, Shanika Kariyawasan and Suneth Gayashan. The firm expects to export around 3.5 bn rupees worth exports each year.
Apparel is the main industrial export of Sri Lanka which brought in 5.5 bn US dollars of revenues in 2019. In 2019 apparel and textile exports dropped 21 percent to 4.42 bn rupees.
