Raja M Shanmugham, President, TEA, recently said that the Government has proposed to form a new Territorial division of Commercial taxes by including Tirupur, Erode and Karur areas and making Erode as Headquarters for the division and in this connection. He appealed TN government to announce Tirupur as headquarter by considering the current and future business potential of Tirupur.
Raja M Shanmugham said that presently, the knitwear sector turnover of Tirupur cluster is to the tune of Rs 42,000 cr and has set a target of reaching Rs 1 Lakh cr likely by 2022 while also emphasising the point that more than 80 per cent of this contribution to Tirupur business is coming from micro, small and medium enterprises, comprising of about 8,350 units. Apart from this, the spinning mills also exist in Tirupur and Palladam area. He also noted that the estimated number of registered dealers is more in Tirupur area as compared to Erode area.
Considering the existence of MSMEs Knitwear units and the future definite growth of knitwear sector, Raja M Shanmugham has sent a requisition letter to Thiru KC Veeramani, Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration, Government of Tamil Nadu and TV Somanathan IAS., Principal Secretary / Commissioner of Commercial Taxes to announce Tirupur as a headquarters for the envisaged new territorial division of commercial taxes.
