BGMEA organised a press conference to brief the media about the recent minimum wage increase and overall situation in the garment industry of Bangladesh. BGMEA President Md. Siddiqur Rahman spoke at the press briefing while BGMEA Senior Vice President Faruque Hassan, Vice President Mahmud Hasan Khan (Babu) and Directors were present.
The BGMEA President said that some vested quarters are spreading rumors about the recent minimum wage increase in the garment industry, creating confusion among people, including garment workers. The minimum wage for garment workers has been increased to BDT 8000 although the apparel industry is facing various challenges, including rise in production cost and fall in product prices, he said. Minimum wages have been raised by 381.35 per cent since 2010, he added.
