As a four-day China’s textile industry’s biennial event, The 19th International Exhibition on Textile Industry (ShanghaiTex 2019) took place at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre from 25 – 28 November, 2019. Under the theme of “Smarter Textile. Better Life,” the show covered nine exhibition halls with a total area of 100,000 sq.mtr, which gathered more than 1,200 international exhibitors who showcased the latest innovations in textile technology and machinery, including knitting & hosiery, spinning/manmade fibre, weaving, digital printing, dyeing and finishing etc.

Other than showcase, a range of concurrent events was organised during the shows, topics included “Artificial Intelligence,” “Wearable Technology” and “Start Up” in the newly established “Textech Galaxy.” Also, following the success of previous edition, “The 2nd Shanghai International Textile Intelligent Manufacturing Forum” introduced the whole chain of the technical manufacturing process and showcased the AI textile products, adding new elements to the show and leading the textile fashion industry to a whole new level. At the same time, The 2nd Artificial Intelligence on Fashion & Textile International Conference (AIFT 2019) was also organised in ShanghaiTex 2019 as a new event, bringing new atmosphere to the show.

Exploring the Future Trends of textile
Some of the highlighted events included Textech Inno Talk (I), Shanghai International Textile Intelligent Manufacturing Forum and The 2nd Wearable Technology X Textile Design Competition (WTTDC), exploring the technology application of textile fashion and the infinite possibilities of industrial innovation, which in turn opened up new opportunities for the textile and fashion industry. The rest of the events included: The 2nd Artificial Intelligence on Fashion & Textile International Conference (AIFT 2019), Mapping Sustainable Fashion & Textile – The Denim Chapter, The International Healthcare and Textile Sci-Tech Innovation Conference and the 2019 Fashion Printing Global Digital Printing Summit Forum etc., which focused on the elements of “Healthy textile,” “Sustainable Denim” and “Digital Printing.”

Furthermore, The 2nd Artificial Intelligence on Fashion & Textile International Conference (AIFT 2019), jointly organised by the ShanghaiTex 2019 and the Institute of Textiles & Clothing, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was the highlight concurrent event under “Textech Galaxy,” which introduced AI as the new star and challenge in the textile and fashion industry, leading the industry to “Industry 4.0” and “New Retail Era.” The scope of the papers included: Internet of things, textile and apparel supply chain modelling, Textile material defect detection, Textile material colour measurement, Smart textile products, 3D image modelling for fitting, Retail sales replenishment and Fashion sales forecasting etc.

Number of key buyers and associations
The exhibition was visited by more than 20 international associations and buyer delegations, including Taiwan Textile Federation, Indonesian Textile Industries Association, Malaysian Knitting Manufacturers Association, Russian Textile Association, South Korean Buyer Delegation and Ukrainian Buyer Delegation etc. On the other hand, the Chinese associations and delegations included Hang Zhou Garment Industry Association, Zhejiang Cotton Textile Association, Yuhang Textile, Natong Teijin, Luthai Textile and Sunrise Group.

Three “Green” concurrent events Exploring ways to balance “Fashion” & “Environmental Sustainability”
The environmental impacts of textile manufacturing industry have all along been a global concern. The textile enterprises, especially from the printing and dyeing industry must take action quickly to resolve the pressing problems, or they will further aggravate the pressures on ecosystems and become an invisible earth “killer”. Other than exhibition, a series of environmental sustainability related conferences were organised during ShanghaiTex 2019 to address the issues arising from high energy and water consumption in the textile and fashion industries, such as how to use green technologies for denim finishing.
